Class 38(3) A centrifuge is driven by an A.C. commutator motor having armature M and series field windings W1, W2, the motor being controlled by means of a manually - operated auto transformer R the adjusting arm of which is mechanically gauged with changeover switches U1, U2. The motor is started by setting the arm of the transformer in the range F, the motor continuing to operate until a time switch T opens at the end of a predetermined period so that the motor may be allowed to coast to a standstill. If, however, the transformer arm is moved beyond the zero position into the braking range B, the armature of the motor is reversed in relation to its field windings, the braking current being smoothly increased by further adjustment of the transformer in the same sense. The braking circuit is opened at a low predetermined speed by means of a centrifugal switch Z. In another arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), braking operation is provided by reversing the field winding W2 with respect to the armature M and field winding W1. An overload safety switch S is provided.
