Abstract

836,900. Control of D.C. motors; controllers. WITHNELL Ltd., A. C. May 9, 1958 [Feb. 14, 1957], No. 5052/57. Class 38 (3). A controller for a battery-vehicle comprises a haft 14 provided with a hand-grip and carrying a cam 16 for limiting angular rotation of the shaft. The member 16 has a pin 19 working in a slot which houses a spring for biasing the shaft 14 to an " off " position, the control shaft being geared to a lay-shaft 24 carrying a brush-arm 26 co-operating with face-plate 27. Four interconnected brushes 29 engage respective rows of concentric segments which are secured by terminal screws to sheet 31. The face-plate is fabricated by casting a synthetic resin on the sheet so that the segments are embedded, and then machining the surface of the resin to expose the segments. Upon closure of a master switch M, the shaft 14 must be brought to its " off " position before relay MPR will operate. The control shaft is now rotated to its first notch to energize contactor R+ and complete the motor circuit through contacts of relay Z. Lowest speed forward drive is thus obtained. Further rotation of the control-shaft up to its sixth notch causes contactors R1-R5 to eliminate resistor R progressively, a lamp PL being extinguished to indicate use of full power. Rotation of the control shaft from the " off " position in the opposite direction operates braking contactor B and relay Z to reverse the relative armature and field connections of the motor, and to close the motor circuit through resistor R. A further braking notch is provided by operating contactor R1. A selector switch S may be positioned to provide reverse drive, a relay INT being operated only if the controller is at its second braking notch. In such position of the selector switch, the motor cannot be energized until the reverse drive connections have been established by operation of the relay INT. Holding circuits for this relay allows adjustment of the controller for reducing the resistor R, the relay Z being operated so that the motor armature connections are reversed.
