Abstract

747,687. Control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Sept. 3, 1954 [Sept. 15, 1953], No. 25522/53. Class 38(3) The armature M of a winder motor is supplied through a controlled' rectifier AR and is adapted to be connected in parallel with a number of resistors SR1- SR4, means being provided for the simultaneous regulation of the output of the rectifier and the value of the parallel resistance. As shown, the sequential operation of a number of contactors S1C-S4C having contacts S1-S4 in series with resistors SR1-SR4 is effected by a master controller MC which is also coupled to an induction regulator 1R in the control circuit of the rectifier. Progressive movement of control handle DL from the "off" position increases the rectifier output and, at the same time, increases the resistance in parallel with the motor, until all the resistors are open-circuited and control of the motor is dependent upon the rectifiers output alone. In another arrangement the rectifier is controlled by means of a stepped resistance in its grid circuit so that the increase of rectifier voltage occurs by finite amounts at given positions of the master controller. When the back-electromotive force of the motor exceeds the rectifier voltage, the circulation of current in the armature and parallelconnected' resistors affords braking operation. The field winding MF of the motor is connected to a cross flux exciter E having a control winding CW adapted for reversible energization according to the direction of operation of the master controller, as well as an opposing winding FW providing negative feed-back. In an automatic winder, wherein the motor is controlled by means differentially responsive to the actual speed of the winder and to a reference value which is cam-adjusted in accordance with the winder-position, the differential means may operate the master controller or otherwise provide control of the motor in the manner described.
