Abstract

537,739. Control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 1, 1940, No. 56. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1938. [Class 38 (iii)] Traction motors have a dynamic braking circuit prepared during coasting. Upon return of the accelerating controller to " off switch LB1 and LB2 open and switch B closes, thus completing a braking loop through resistances 19, 21 and energization of the field 16, 17 from a battery 53. The voltage across part of the resistance 21 is applied to coil 44 of a relay 46 and thus controls coil 47 operating the fluid valve of device 27 which adjusts resistance 19 so as to obtain a low current in the braking loop. When the current in the loop reaches a predetermined value, the relay 46 engages its upper contact and causes field shunting contactors FS3 and FS4 to close. The motors continue to coast with fields partly excited and a small current in the braking loop. Operation of a braking controller then causes contactors FS3 and FS4 to open and give full field for dynamic braking. Specifications 514,005 and 514,263 are referred to.
