Apparatus for controlling the quenching of coke in a coke quenching tower comprises a water spray system 2 having a supply valve 3 actuated by mechanism 4 which is operated by a solenoid 4a connected to a conductor rail 6 engaged by an arm 7 disposed on the locomotive which pushes the coke car under the quenching tower 1, said locomotive carrying a control unit 8. The locomotive may be driven from a multi-phase power system having conductors R.S. & T., and the control unit 8 comprises a switch box 9 with two press-button switches 9a and 9b, a timing device 10, an auxiliary relay 11, and an indicator lamp 12..As the coke car enters the quenching tower 1, the arm 7. engages the conductor 6 establishing a circuit from the conductor T to the solenoid 4a, the current being sufficient to light the indicating lamp 12 but not to operate the solenoid 4a. When the coke car has entered the quenching tower, the locomotive driver presses switch 9a, energizing the timing relay coil 10a and the auxiliary relay coil 11a, which latter closes the contacts 11b and 11c, short circuiting the switch 9a and the lamp 12. The full potential is now applied to the solenoid 4a causing the mechanism 4 to open the water supply valve 3. After a predetermined time, the timing relay operates, opening the contact 10b to de-energize the relay coils 10a and 11a and the solenoid 4a, thus closing the valve 3. If, after the timing relay has operated, the quenching operation is not complete, the driver can start the cycle of operations again by pressing switch 9a and, during quenching, he can stop operations by pressing switch 9b, thus de-energizing the solenoid 4a and the relay coils 10a and 11a.
