Abstract

541,553. Electric signalling systems. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and MACKENZIE. J. F. May 30, 1940, No. 9468. [Class 40 (i)] In a system for the control of power-consuming units over the supply network by means of alternating currents interrupted at various slow rates or cadences, the actuation of a pushbutton or of a time switch causes a rotary switch FA to take up a position individual to the appropriate control signal, whereupon transmission takes 'place automatically for a pre-determined time. The system provides for 24 distinctive signals by the use of 4 different audio-frequencies supplied by alternators ATR1-4 and 6 different cadences. On the actuation of one of the push-buttons PB1-24, the switch FA steps to the corresponding position and energizes a self-locking relay IR which starts the common driving motor ACM of the alternators. After a short delay imposed by a motor-driven timing mechanism MS circuits are made over wipers of FA for one of the operating coils MCR1-4 of the contactors CR1-4 in order to supply direct current to the stator of the appropriate alternator and for one of the operating coils MC1-4 of the contactors C1-4, the latter circuit including appropriate cadence contacts. One of the cadence controllers 1RC, 2RC is connected up for one revolution, and just before completing the revolution it closes a releasing circuit for relay 1R, whereupon the motor ACM is stopped and the switch FA advances again. If any other push-button has been depressed, FA takes up the corresponding position, otherwise it stops in its home position. Lamps may be provided for indicating the condition of the units under control. Time switches for the control of street lighting comprise contacts tsd, closed at dusk and opened at dawn and contacts tsm closed momentarily at midnight. These contacts control relays 5R, 4R, which cause a rotary switch FB to move to positions 8, 16, 24 respectively at dusk, midnight and dawn in order to mark positions of the switch FA corresponding to the appropriate signals. In a similar way, certain positions may be marked by relays such as 2R, 3R controlled by remote push-buttons. For emergency use, duplicate cadence controlling apparatus under direct manual control may be provided, the motor ACM being started and the contactors CR1-4 being operated manually. Specifications 518,877 and 520,500 are referred to.
