Abstract

424,156. Switching systems for consuming devices. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., Deptford, and CHILTON, A. H., 200, Brompton Road, both in London. July 10, 1933, No. 16642/34. Divided out of 424,126. [Class 38 (iv)] [See also Group XXXVII] The load switchgear of a train-lighting &c. installation comprises an electromagnetic relay which controls the excitation of the electromagnetic contactor switch for effecting the connection of the load circuit to the source of supply. The installation comprises five wires 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and change-over switchgear 13, 14, 15 controlling the batteries 7, 8 as set forth in Specification 424,126. The main lights 17 and fans 18 are supplied through electromagnetic contactor switches 19, 20 under control by a. manual switch 21. The switch 19 comprises a pull-on winding 23 connected to the " on " wire 5 and a hold-on winding 24 connected in series with the contacts 25 of the switch. Similarly switch 20 comprises pull-on winding 30 and hold-on winding 31. The contacts 28 of a relay are in series with the pull-on winding 23 and its winding 28 is connected to the " off " wire 4. The windings 33, 34 controlling contacts 35 are connected to the " off " wire 4 and " on " wire 5 respectively. The manual switch 21 has three press-button contacts 36, 37, 38. Depression of contact 36 momentarily energizes the " on " wire 5 and current flows through windings 23, 30 to close switch contacts 25, 32 and the lamp wire 1 is energized and the fans connected to the paralleling wire 2. Current then flows in the hold-on windings 24, 31 and the press button switch 36 may be released. If the switch 37 is now closed, the " off " wire 4 is energized and current flows through windings 27, 33 to open contacts 28, 35 and break the circuit to the hold-on windings 24, 31 whereby the contactor switches open and the lamps and fans are disconnected. If both the " on " and " off wires 5, 4 are momentarily energized by depressing contact 38, the relay winding 27 open contacts 28 and the small current through the balanced and opposed windings 23, 24 does not close the switch 19. Both windings 33, 34 are energized and oppose each other so that contact 35 remains closed and switch contacts 32 are closed to establish connection to the fan circuit only. The supply to the embarkation lights 49 is controlled by the contacts 48 of the switch 19. The relay of the lighting switch has a clapper type armature 39, Fig. 5, pivoted on the yoke 40 and carries the movable contact 28 on a spring blade 41. A helical spring 42 presses the movable contact against the fixed contact which is adjustable in an end-frame 43. A striker 44 ensures positive opening of the contacts. If a second winding and magnet is included a separate yoke 45 and armature 46 are provided and the armature 46 is rigidly connected to the armature 39. Specification 424,127, [Group XXXVII], also is referred to.
