Abstract
724,967. Practice projectiles. ANSTALT FUR DIE ENTWICKLUNG VON ERFINDUNGEN UND GEWERBLICHEN ANWENDUNGEN ENERGA. March 13, 1953 [April 5, 1952], No. 7054/53. Class 9(1). A practice projectile, Fig. 2, which is of the same weight and calibre as the corresponding live round, Fig. 1, and is fired by the same propellant charge comprises a hollow cylindrical body 1, a ballistic cap 2 and a flat base 3, the base and cap having frictional engagement with the body to facilitate disintegration on impact. The base supports a tracer charge adapted to ignite a self-destruction charge 6 through a relay charge 5. The body 1 preferably consists of steel, cast iron or brass, while the cap 2 and base 3 may be of aluminium alloy ; the proportions of body, cap and base being so chosen that the centre of gravity of the projectile is situated at one fourth height of the projectile from the base. The projectile has a driving band 7, preferably consisting of a metal wire embedded in a groove 7a. Attached to the projectile is a cartridge case 8 identical with that of the live round and containing a primer 9 in a perforated housing 10 surrounded by bags of powder 11. The case has a cardboard lining 12 to vary the internal volume of the case and so compensate for dimensional differences between the practice projectile and the live projectile. The practice projectile is stabilised by the slow rotation imparted to it by the rifling of the gun. The metal cap may be replaced by a cap of synthetic plastic material.
