Abstract

924,467. Hollow charges for ammunition and blasting devices. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. May 22, 1959 [May 24, 1958], No. 17623/59. Class 9 (1) An explosive device includes a hollow charge with a liner, the arrangement of the charge and/or liner being such that on detonation, fragments of the liner are projected along the axis of the charge with a component of angular velocity relative to that axis. The angular velocity may be produced by forming the liner as a hollow cone having a stepped surface as shown in Fig. 1; the surfaces 2 of the sectors a-f may be arcs of circles or of spirals. Alternatively, the liner may be shaped as a spiral cone and formed by winding a strip of sheet metal. Other shapes of liner may be used, for example as described in Specification 907,878. Another method of producing the angular velocity is to use a normal circular cone liner and to insert in the explosive charge an explosive capsule having a speed of detonation different from that of the main charge. The projected particles may be used as a combat weapon or for blasting and enlarging holes in rock. As shown in Fig. 5, a secondary grooved projectile 18 may be attached to the liner 17; the main explosive charge 21 is fired by fuze 22, a high velocity and spin being imparted to the projectile.
