Abstract

645,611. Blasting charges; projectiles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 10, 1943, No. 12889. [Class 9 (i)] A destructive explosive device e.g. for military demolition &c. or for ammunition to be projected or dropped, e.g. projectiles, bombs, grenades, torpedoes &c. and of the kind in which the face of a primed detonating explosive charge presentea towards the object to be attacked is recessed and metal-lined, comprises an additional explosive charge in detonation contact with and in front of the recessed face, the additional explosive charge being arranged for initiation immediately after initiation of the primed detonating explosive charge and being cavitied to give a clear blast path for the primed explosive charge. The primed explosive charge 4 may be cast in a canister 2 of sheet metal provided with a recessed metal base 1 of heavier gauge, the additional charge 15 being cast through an aperture 16 in a casing 12 of sheet metal having a base 13 applied to the surface 21 to be attacked, and a tapering cavity 14 for passage of the blast from the charge 4. According to a modification the additional charge may be formed without a base, and may comprise oppositely disposed conical portions 17, 18, Fig. 2, the lower of which may be of heavy gauge metal similar to the base 1, or of similar gauge to the portion 17.
