Abstract

735,012. Ammunition projectiles. ANSTALT FUR DIE ENTWICKLUNG VON ERFINDUNGEN UND GEWERBLICHEN ANWENDUNGEN ENERGA. Nov. 19, 1953 [Dec. 19, 1952], No. 32143/53. Class 9(1). A hollow-charge projectile having a fuze 1 mounted in the head 2 which is secured to the body 3 closed by the base 4, is provided with a rotatable driving band 5. The band 5 is housed in an annular recess between the body 3 and the base 4, at least one washer being placed between the band and a wall of the recess, whereby only part of the angular velocity given to the band by the rifling of the gun is transmitted to the projectile. Projections 7, 8 of the band are adapted to engage the rifling of the gun. In a modification, Fig. 2, a ring 11 and two washers 9, 10 are interposed between the band and its housing, the ring 11 being free to slide, so that the driving band is freely mounted. The cartridge case 12, which abuts the projection 8, is crimped on to a ring 14 housed in the base 4 of the projectile to form a fluid-tight seal. Another modification shows the driving band fixed in a metallic ring which is rotatably housed in the wall of the projectile. Gas-escape passages in the projectile casing are provided near the driving band. The band may be of ductile material, e.g. copper, graphite, antifriction alloys, or of agglomerated fibres or leather. For sub-calibre projectiles the driving band is rotatably mounted in a segmental sabot or ring rigid with the projectile until it leaves the gun. The projectile contains a hollow charge 17 fitted with a metal liner 18 and is provided with stabilising fins 19. For a projectile stabilised by slow spin, Fig. 5, a carrier ring 5a, to house the rotatable driving band 5, is placed against one or more washers 20 and a securing ring 21 is then screwed on to the base. By tightening the ring 21, the degree of friction between the surfaces may be regulated. Openings 22 in the ring 21 allow the propellant gases to press against the carrier ring. Specification 683,484 is referred to.
