Abstract
724,298. Condensing metallic vapours; zinc. ST. JOSEPH LEAD CO. March 9, 1953 [March 13, 1952], No. 6446/53. Class 82 (1). In a method of condensing metallic vapour from a gas stream by bubbling it through a mass of molten metal from a lower to an upper free surface, the flow of molten metal is restricted except where it is carried upwards by the gases so as to create a pressure head which is utilized to cause flow of molten metal from an upper portion of the mass through an external cooler and back to a lower portion of the mass. As shown, gases from a furnace 5 containing zinc vapour are drawn through the condenser 1 containing molten zinc connected to a suction pipe 6, bubbles of gases and vapour passing along the roof portion 8 and carrying with them a stream of molten zinc. The baffle 9 provides a large opening 10 for this stream, but the opening 11 being much smaller, the head of zinc is increased sufficiently to cause it to flow out through a conduit 16 and a cooler 17 and back to the condenser at 18. A baffle 12 also may be provided. The cooler 17 contains a cooling coil 19 through which water is passed, and which canbe raised or lowered so as to adjust the cooling effect, a temperature of 475-528‹ C. in the condenser being preferred. Zinc is tapped off periodically from the cooler, which may be modified by provision of a well connecting with an auxiliary chamber for separating off any lead which may be condensed in addition to the zinc. Specification 451,774 is referred to.
