Class 8 (ii) In subliming carbon dioxide from a cold regenerator A by the passage of cold gas e.g., nitrogen or oxygen from an air separation column and collecting substantially pure carbondioxide-free cooling gas near the end of a cooling period and adding it to the cooling gas used for the subsequent cooling of a regenerator B to provide a mass of cooling gas in excess of the gas from which the carbon dioxide is to be separated, the excess cooling gas is obtained during its course through the regenerator A being cooled e.g., during the last tenth of the period, by running it from at least one outlet C and a valved duct 3 leading to an auxiliary regenerator D and a gas holder E from which the gas is forced by a fan 6 back through the auxiliary regenerator and a valved duct 9 to supplement the cooling gas during the first nine-tenths of the cooling period of the regenerator B. During the last tenth of this period the valve 8 is closed and an outlet C<SP>1</SP> is opened to allow cooling of the regenerator D and recharging of the gas holder E. The outlets C, C<SP>1</SP> are located above the point of sublimation and in a modification each regenerator A, B has a second outlet and duct located below the first.
