Abstract

723,670. Cutting and perforating apparatus. JAMIN, H. P. C. April 7, 1952 [Aug. 27, 1951], No. 8787/52. Classes 31 (1) and 31 (2). [Also in Group XVII] In a wrapping-machine (see Group XVII) in which a chain of packages is formed by enclosing successive articles in a tube of wrapping material and sealing the tube transversely between adjacent articles, individual packages are separated from the chain by rotary severing and/or perforating mechanism which, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, comprises opposed discs or drums 25 carrying severing and/or perforating tools 27, 28 located between package-supporting plates 26. In one form, Fig. 9, the tools 27 are resiliently mounted in sleeves 41 pivoted to a rotary spider 32 and carrying arms 36 having rollers 35 engaging a cam groove 34 in a stationary disc. Blocks 43, corresponding to the tools 28, are similarly arranged on an opposed rotary spider and are formed with openings 45 for the reception of the operative portions 38 of the tools 27 and lateral holes 46 for the discharge of shreds of paper. The sleeves and blocks carry plates 42, 44 corresponding to the plates 26. The cam grooves 34 are so shaped that the tools and blocks are swung into vertical positions just prior to their engagement with the chain of packages and are returned to radial positions after the severing or perforating operation has been completed. In a second form, Figs. 10 and 11, the tools consist of knives 57 and 49 with bevelled edges, the former being adjustably mounted on blocks 55 pivoted on pins 54 extending between a pair of upper discs 53 and the latter being adjustably mounted in blocks 48 secured between lower discs 47. Each block 55 is formed with arms 60 and 62, the, latter engaging a stop 63 under the action of a spring 61 coupled to the former so that the block normally assumes a radial position. Each knife 57 is formed with an abutment 59 which engages the opposed knife 49 to ensure that the knives are parallel during the cutting operation. The blocks 55 and 48 carry package-supporting plates 64 and 52.
