[Also in Group VIII] A rotatable shearing device for cutting a continuously-fed strand of packages transversely into individual packages comprises a rotatable shear wheel 6, 8, 10 having equallyspaced knife edges 22 extending axially and parallel to the axis of the shear wheel, and a roller 16 rotatable about an axis parallel to that of the shear wheel, the roller 16 having an oblique knife edge 20 which co-operates in succession with the knife edges 22 to effect a drawing cut across the package strand. In the form shown for cutting individual tetrahedrallyformed packages t, Fig. 4, from a strand T of packages with consecutively-formed sealing zones between individual packages arranged respectively axially and radially of the shear wheel, the shearing device also comprises a plurality of radially-acting shears 24, Fig. 2, which are actuated between successive shearing actions of the knife edges 20, 22, the shears each comprising shanks 26, 26<SP>1</SP> rotatable about pivots 28 and the shanks having projecting arms 32, 32<SP>1</SP> formed with spherically-rounded outer ends 34, 34<SP>1</SP> engageable in angularlydisplaced cam grooves 36, 38 in stationary discs 42, 44. The shear wheel is driven from the packaging machine by means of a chain 58 passing over a sprocket wheel 12, and the roller 16 is driven from the shear wheel by means of gears 14, 18. The knife edge 20 is adjustable and exchangeable. As shown in Fig. 4, the strand T from the packaging machine is placed over the shear wheel ; alternatively, a shoot or a chain conveyer running over sprockets on the shear wheel may be provided for this purpose.
