Abstract

1,023,841. Wrapping - machines. A. SCHMERMUND. May 31, 1963 [June 8, 1962], No. 21798/63. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B4] In a wrapping-machine in which two wrapper portions are cut from a single web and overlapped prior to folding round a batch of cigarettes &c., a rotating two-bladed cutter severs the web against a counter roller, the second portion being accelerated prior to cutting to produce the overlap. The web is advanced by variable speed rollers 15, 16 between the cutters 1, 2 and the counter roller 14 (see also Division B4). In one embodiment, the first cut portion is deflected and held by a stationary suction member 27 while the web is advanced at increased speed and cut by the second blade. A roller 30 on a reciprocating holder 43 clamps the overlap against a further roller 29 and both wrapper portions are advanced at the same speed as they are taken up by the batch of cigarettes 46. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the first portion is held by apertured belts 55, 56, above and below the path of the batch, to which suction is applied, and deflected by a rod 51. A further belt 54, opposite the upper belt 55, engages the second portion and then clamps the overlap against the belt 55 and both portions are advanced as before. The cutters are angularly adjustable relative to one another.
