Abstract

1,274,832. Wrapping machine. ROSE FORGROVE Ltd. 14 Jan., 1971 [16 Jan., 1970], No. 2296/70. Heading B8C. A wrapping machine, of the kind comprising a tube former, not shown, adapted to form a continuously travelling web of wrapping material into a tube, means, not shown, for feeding articles 11 in spaced relation to the tube former so that they become entubed in the wrapping material, and rotary crimping heads 13, 13, disposed downstream of the tube former and operative to form transverse joints in the tube between the articles is characterized in that, a conveyer 17 is provided for supporting the base of each article 11 in the tube at the crimping zone and has transverse interruptions 19 permitting engagement of the crimping heads with the tube. As shown, a tube 10 of wrapping material containing entubed articles 11 is advanced by belts 12 to the crimping heads 13, 13 each of which carries a crimping die 14 and a cutter 15. In this embodiment top and bottom support is afforded for the tubed articles at the crimping zone by chain slat conveyers 17, having groups of slats 18 extending between parallel chains and separated by the gaps 19, the conveyers 17 also operating to discharge the packages. In a modification, Figs. 4, 6, in which the top crimping head is not shown, but which rotates about the centre X, slats 18 are driven by chains 20 passing round sprockets 21 on shafts 22 and driven by a chain drive 23 from the shaft 24 of the lower crimping head. If desired, each crimping head may carry two crimping jaws which interact with gaps between the chain slats or with cut-outs in a belt conveyer, each crimping head then being geared to perform half a revolution per patch of gaps, or cut outs. If the crimping heads are followed by another set of rotary cutting heads the interrupted conveyer, or conveyers, may be extended to support the tube also at the cutting zone.
