Abstract
1,024,281. Cigarette-making machines. ZAVODY V. I. LENINA PLZEN, NARODNI PODNIK. June 20, 1963 [June 23, 1962], No. 24499/63. Heading A2C. Six-fold filter lengths are fed from a hopper 1 to a supply drum 2 and are placed in every third groove of a distributing cylinder 4. The periphery of the drum 4 is divided into two sections 4a, equal to a third of the width of the periphery, and 4b equal to two-thirds of the width of the periphery. A cutting knife 14 operates between the two sections. The drum 4 is driven by a sprocket 5 and an endless link chain 6, each link being of a length equivalent to the distance between successive grooves. The links are provided with successive abutments 8, 10 and 12, the abutments 8 and 10 being of such a length that a sixfold filter fits exactly a groove in the drum 4, and the abutment 12 being of a shorter length such that a double length filter is not engaged by the knife 14. The number of links of the chain is such that on successive revolutions of the drum each groove co-acts with abutment 8, 10 and 12 in succession. In operation, the six-fold filter is blown against an abutment 8 and severed into a two-fold filter and a fourfold filter by the knife 14 on the first revolution of the drum. The two-fold filter is taken off by a drum 15. The groove containing the four-fold filter comes adjacent an abutment 10 on the next revolution of the drum. The four-fold filter is then blown against the abutment 10 and is cut into two two-fold filters one of which is taken by the drum 15. The remaining twofold filter is blown against an abutment 12 with which its groove has come into cooperation during the next revolution of the drum, is unaffected by the knife 14 and is in turn taken by the drum 15. If eight-fold filters are to be cut, they are fed to every fourth groove of the drum 4 which is divided into two parts in the ratio 1:3, and the chain 6 is provided with a sequence of three longer and one shorter abutments. In a further embodiment, the multiple length filters may be fed to a further drum before being passed to the drum 4. The knife 14 co-operates with both drums and an initial two-fold filter length is cut on the further drum on which it remains. The remaining multiple length filter is passed to the drum 4, cut into two-fold lengths by the knife 14 and passed back to the further drum (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown).
