Apparatus for severing a continuous web to form a plurality of discrete portions, such as sockets, comprises a star wheel 3 having knife blades 7 secured to the points thereof, means for feeding one end of the web to a pocket between points on the star wheel a delivery station 29 for receiving the severed portions after discharge from the star wheel, at least one movable knife blade 19 co-operable with a blade 7 to sever from the web the portion in the pocket and means 31 for moving the severed portions radially outwardly of the star wheel during travel towards the delivery station. The movable knife blades 19 are each mounted on arms 18 which are pivoted on link pins 16 of a chain 4 and formed with followers 20 co-operating with a cam surface 21, 21<SP>1</SP>. The chain is driven by sprockets (9, 10, Fig. 2) secured to the star wheel and is provided with bars 15 adapted to engage with the outer surfaces of the blades 7 as shown in Fig. 1. In operation, a web of sachets, such as tea bags, is fed upwardly so that its leading end is gripped between a bar 15 and a blade 7 so that the web is then carried around with the star wheel. At a certain point in the rotation of the star wheel, a blade 19 is urged, by the cam surface 21<SP>1</SP>, into co-operation with a blade 7 on the wheel so as to sever a sachet from the web. In order to carry successively severed sachets from the star wheel to a delivery shoot 29, wing member 31 having arms 33 are arranged to rotate with the star wheel and are carried by arms 35 which, via followers 37 co-operating with a cam 38, lift the sachet from a pocket and transfer it to the shoot. As the arms 35 pass by the end of the shoot they press on the last sachet in the shoot in order to make room for the following sachet. At regular intervals during the operation of the apparatus spacers 40 are introduced into certain pockets of the star wheel so as to separate the sachets into bundles in the shoot. In a modification, the followers 20 may be replaced by rollers (53, Fig. 3) arranged to run in a guide cam track 51, 52.
