[Class 78 (i)] [See also Groups VI, I, and XVII] In cutting bars of sugar into pieces by cutting through the side faces which are perpendicular to the supporting surface, both ends of the bars are held by a yielding force. The bars, preferably superimposed on one another, are cut by being carried between a pair of rollers carrying knife blades at a speed equal to the speed of rotation of the knife blades. After cutting, the pieces of sugar are pushed out en bloc into a carton. Bars of sugar z, advancing on a conveyer band 1, Fig. 4, are pushed by a member 8 into a rotatable carrier 21, 22. On rotation through 90‹ the bars are placed in superimposed condition on slide l where they are held by members 25, 26 both of which are yielding. They are then carried between rotating cutters m, the cutters of which comprise knife blades 57 disposed round the periphery of a rotating roller 56, Fig. 8, the speed of the slide and the peripheral speed of the blades being equal so as to prevent crushing. After cutting, the pieces pass to a rotatable carrier 30, Fig. 9, mounted on the same shaft 20 as the carrier 21, 22 which carries the pieces to a position over the cartons 47 into which a plunger 37 pushes them, two successive layers filling a carton. The same cycle is carried out with slide k. The cartons are advanced by conveyer chain 46. The knife blades 57 of the cutters are held between tension sleeves 51, 52 and 53, 54, Fig. 7, adjustment being provided by screws 58 and nuts 59, 60.
