Abstract

722,912. Spinning rings and travelers. MORGAN CRUCIBLE CO., Ltd. Nov. 21, 1952 [Nov. 30, 1951; Nov. 30, 1951], Nos. 28209/51 and 28210/51. Class 120 (2). A.traveller, for use on a doubling ring having at least one " square " end, i.e. a ring in which the upper and/or lower bearing surfaces meet the inner and outer peripheral walls substantially at right angles, has hooked portions for engaging respectively over the upper and lower ends of the ring, at least one of said hooked portions being furnished medially with an inwardly directed bearing part or lobe adapted when the traveller is applied to the ring, to lie adjacent to, and to bear, either initially or when the traveller is in motion, upon the bearing surface at a " square " end of the ring so as to maintain those parts of the said hooked portion of the traveller which adjoin and lie on each side of the bearing part or lobe out of contact with the corners of the ring. As shown (Fig. 1) the ring 1 is rectangular in cross section and has flat horizontal upper and lower bearing surfaces 3 and 4. The traveller has upper and lower hooked portions 7 and 8 each provided with a central bearing part or lobe 13 and 14 respectively. On either side of the bearing parts 13 and 14 the said hook portions of the traveller are splayed outwards as at 15, 16, 19 and 20 away from the respective corners of the ring. The bearing parts or lobes may be of loop-like form as shown at 131 in Fig. 3. The traveller may have an additional hooked portion 25 (Fig. 5) which trails behind the hooked portions 7 and 8 and helps to stabilise the traveller on the ring. An alternative additional hooked portion 28 (Fig. 8) may be provided at the top of the traveller which portion will bear on the surface of the ring in front of the hooked part 7 and keep this surface free of fly, &c. The ring is preferably made of sintered iron but may be formed of steel or a self-lubricating material such as carbon or bronze. According to the first Provisional Specification the travellers may be of Y or Z shape and be made of copper beryllium alloy and the second Provisional Specification discloses travellers having the additional-stabilising or wiping hooked portions but without the central bearing parts or lobes.
