Abstract

722,567. Knitting-machines. VERWALTUNGSGES. DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Sept. 24, 1952 [Sept. 26, 1951], No. 23909/52. Class 74 (2). The thread carriers of a straight bar machine are driven through their carrier bars from a bar 5 driven from the coulier mechanism, a clutch, in the form of a spring-pressed slide 17 having sloping surfaces 26, 27 engaging a ball 28, serving to frictionally transmit the drive to the carriers. The ball 28 rests on a surface 35 on the bar 5, the surfaces 26, 27 confining the ball to one end or the other of a space defined between the surfaces and the bar 5. Upon the bar 5 being moved in one direction the ball is wedged between one surface 26, 27 and the bar 5 to transmit the drive in that direction. Towards the end of its traverse the housing 6 attached to the clutch is retarded by a yieldable stop 14 before coming to rest by engaging fixed stop 13. The engagement of the fixed stop causes the ball 28 to raise the slide against spring 25 and to roll to the other end of the space, thereby disengaging the clutch whilst the bar continues to move in the same direction. Reversal of motion of the bar 5 reconnects the clutch by causing the ball to engage between the other surface 27, 26 and the bar 5 at the appropriate end of the space. To reduce friction between the underside of the bar 5 and a supporting flange 32, when the clutch is released and the bar continues to move, rollers 37 may be interposed between the flange 32 and the bar.
