722,263. Loud-speakers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BRITTAIN, F. H. Sept, 19, 1952 [Oct. 3, 1951], No. 23045/51. Class 40 (4). In a loud-speaker having a conical diaphragm, a rigid plug occupying between 10 and 20 per cent of the volume of the diaphragm cone is disposed within the boundaries of the cone, and at least a portion of the plug is in the form of a cone having the same angle as the diaphragm and extends from the apex of the cone with its curved surface close to the diaphragm. The presence of the plug is said to smooth out the frequency response of the loud-speaker. Plug 5, Fig. 2, comprises two cylinders 8, 9 joined by a conical portion 10 and the lengths of the cone and outer cylinder found to give the optimum result are stated to be 15-25 per cent and 50 per cent of the depth of the diaphragm, respectively. The distance between the conical plug surface and the diaphragm is said to be critical and limits of <1>/16 to <1>/4 inch are given in connection with a 6-inch metal cone. The plugs which may be of wood, metal, or plastic may be hollow provided that hollowing does not give rise to undesirable resonance. Specifications 461,073 and 604,159 are referred to.
