A valve comprises an annular closure member formed on the lower end of a cylinder and cooperating with a seat surrounding an outflow port, and remotely controlled fluid-pressure means for opening the closure member against a spring positioned between the closure member and a fixed piston over which the cylinder slides, there being apertures in the lower end of the cylinder leading to the outflow port so that the closure member will be urged to the closed position on the application of back pressure to the outflow port. As shown, the closure member 22 is a hollow body sliding on a stationary piston 31 carried by the container, e.g. a tank 17, and the top cover of the member 22 carries a piston 43 sliding in a cylinder formed in the stem of stationary piston 31. A ring projecting from the member 22 co-operates with an annular seat 56 on the tank to control the discharge of liquid from the tank to an outflow pipe 14. The member 22 is urged to the closed position by a spring 47, but fluid pressure applied through conduit 49 will act on piston 43 and raise the closure member. Should a back pressure occur in the pipe 14, this will be transmitted through apertures 61 to the liquid in the lower part 62 of the cylinder 22 and, due to the differential areas of the relevant surfaces, the member 22 will be forced to the closed position.
