Abstract

721,123. Lubricating rails. KINKI NIPPON TETSUDO KABUSHIKI-KAISHA. Aug. 10, 1953. No. 22048/53. Class 12 (3). An automatic rail oiler comprises a bar 6 secured to an unsprung part 3 of a carriage and having a resilient portion carrying a guide roller 9 for engagement with the inner face of a rail flange, the lower end of the bar carrying an oiling device normally out of contact with the rail but adapted to have rolling contact with the inside corner of the rail when the carriage passes around a curve or partakes of "snaking" motion on the straight part of the track. As shown, the oiling device comprises a casing 10 containing a rotatably mounted ring 16 with a conical periphery part of which projects through a recess at the bottom of the casing. Oil is supplied by a pipe 12 from a reservoir on the carriage, to a chamber 18 on the casing 10. Flow to the conical ring 16 is controlled by a spring-pressed valve 19 shaped so as to supply a film of oil to the ring when it rotates. Normally the ring 16 is held just clear of the rail, by means of the guide roller, but when the carriage passes around a curve the flange of the wheel moves away slightly from the ring, allowing it to make contact with the corner of the rail so that it rotates and transfers oil to the rail.
