Abstract

720,692. Refrigerators. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 11, 1953 [Feb. 23. 1952], No. 3795/53. Class 29. The inner door 26 of the freezer compartment 14 within a refrigerator 12 is held closed by a pair of resilient devices 52, 60 one of which lightly biasses the inner door to closed position and the other being effec- 'tive to seal the freezer compartment only upon closing, of the outer door 16. The door 26 comprises a plastic shell mounted on arms 28 pivoted horizontally at 30 to the inner walls of the storage compartment, and the spring 52 normally keeps the door lightly closed. A pair of spring-pressure plungers 60 on the inner surface of the outer door 16 press against the inner door 26 when the outer door is closed to force a sealing gasket 38 against the opening 34 of the freezer compartment. To allow for differential expansion and contraction of the inner and outer surfaces of the inner door the plastic shell 26 is closed at its inner side by a metal panel 36 supporting the gasket 38 and secured to the shell 26 bv screws 40 passing loosely through holes in the panel. A handle 62 is provided for opening the door 26 and a stop 66 limits its downward movement so that it can be used as a shelf.
