Letter-spacing mechanism.-An escapement mechanism for a typewriter or like machine comprises a rocker 3 pivotally carrying a loose pawl 12 which is displaced from engagement with a ratchet wheel 4 during carriage return by an extension 8a of a cup-shaped disc 8 frictionally coupled to the ratchet wheel 4 by a non-metallic friction disc 9 by the pressure of a spider spring 10. The pawl 12 pivots on an axis 13 and has a tooth 12a for engaging the ratchet wheel, and a forked end 12b which bears between the turned down ends 14a, 14b of a pair of tongs 14 hooked together so that the ends engage a fixed stop 16 on the rocker 3 and maintain the pawl 12 resiliently in a central position. The rotation of the pawl 12 is limited on the one hand by a series of leaf springs 18 and on the other by a screw 19.
