[Class 100 (iv)] Letter-spacing mechanism.-In escapements comprising a rocker provided with two dogs cooperating with a toothed member, shock and noise are reduced by mounting the dogs on a carrier which can yield relatively to the rocker. In the escapement shown in bottom plan in the Figure, a carrier 24 for holding and stepping dogs 31, 38, co-operating with an escapement-wheel 18, is pivoted on a pin 25 on a rocker 19 mounted on trunnions 20. The carrier is yieldingly held in normal position by opposed springs 28 which abut on the carrier and rocker. The holding and stepping dogs, 31, 38 are pivoted on pins 32, 39, the holding-dog being held in contact with a stop 36 by means of a light spring 37, and the stepping-dog being connected to a light returning-spring 42. On depression of the keys, the holding-dog is released, and the escapement-wheel turns until the stepping-dog is arrested by engagement of a stiff spring- finger 43 thereon with a stop 33, shock being reduced by momentary yielding of the finger and the carrier. On release of the keys, the stepping-dog is released, and the escapementwheel, after turning slightly, is arrested by the holding-dog, shock being reduced by momentary yielding of the carrier. The holding-dog swings when the carriage is returned, impact on the stop 36 being cushioned by yielding of the carrier.
