Letter-spacing mechanism. - In escapement mechanism comprising a rocker carrying fast and loose pawls, the rocker 18, Figs. 4 and 5, is actuated by the type-levers 3 striking the upper end of a double-armed lever 12, 14 the lower end of which engages another double-armed lever 15, 16 bearing upon an angle-stop 17 extending downwardly from the rocker. The two double-armed levers 12, 14 and 15, 16 are mounted on pins 10, 11 in a bearing block 7 secured at the centre of the back of the type-lever segment 4. The upper end of the arm 12 of the upper lever projects through a corresponding aperture in a type guide 6 which is secured at the central portion of the segment. A resilient buffer 13 is arranged transversely at the end of the arm 12 to receive the impact of the type-levers. The rocker 18 is pivoted at 25 on a bracket 24 mounted in the carriage support 13, and carries the loose pawl 26 on a pivot 9, the fast pawl 27 being secured by rivets. The loose pawl 26 is normally in engagement with an escapement wheel 32 mounted on a shaft 34 which also carries a pinion 33 in engagement with the carriage rack 35. A rockerreturning spring is secured between the carriage support and a pin 29 on the rocker. The. typelevers 3 are pivoted on pins 5 within slots in the segment 4 and are connected to the key-levers by intermediate levers 2. A spring-key is provided and operates a lever 19, Fig. 5, which is pivoted at the lower end of a double armed lever 20 journaled in an angle bracket 21 on the carriage support 23.
