Abstract

539,999. Typewriters. BURGESS, A. F. (Smith & Corona Typewriters, Inc., L. C.). Sept. 17, 1940 No. 14280. [Class 100 (iv)] The universal bar of a typewriter consists of a bent spring-wire 45 having a finger 45a in the path of the type-bars 24, another finger 45b pivotally connected to an escapement 35, and a straight part passing through a guide 46. When a type-bar engages the finger 45a, the universal bar is moved rearwardly to actuate the escapement, and on arrest thereof by a stop 35a, the .universal bar is flexed to cushion the typebar and to repulse the latter after impression. In the construction shown, the escapement carries dogs 36, 37 and is pivoted at 40 to a bracket 16 on a carriage-bed 14 having shiftmounting on trunnions 18. The finger 45a of the universal bar is mounted in pivot-holes which are formed in lugs 35b on the escapement and are co-axial with the trunnions 18, the arrangement enabling the carriage to be shifted ,without disturbing the universal bar.
