Abstract

Fibres and films made from copolymers of acrylonitrile and a vinyl ester of an aliphatic alpha-halogen carboxylic acid, such as vinyl monochloroacetate, in which acrylonitrile is the main component, are rendered dyeable with acid wool or direct cotton dyestuffs by treatment at an elevated temperature with a solution, preferably aqueous, of an aliphatic base, whereby the combined halogen is exchanged for the residue of the base. Amines specified are n-butylamine, dimethylamine, diethylamine, sym-dimethyl ethylene diamine, and asym-diethyl ethylene diamine.ALSO:Copolymers of acrylonitrile and a vinyl ester of an aliphatic alpha-halogen-carboxylic acid, such as vinyl monochloracetate, in which acrylonitrile is the main component, are rendered dyeable with acid wool or direct cotton dyestuffs by treatment at an elevated temperature with a solution, preferably aqueous, of an aliphatic base, whereby the combined halogen is exchanged for the residue of the base. Amines specified are n-butylamine, dimethylamine, diethylamine, sym-dimethyl ethylene diamine, and asym-diethyl ethylene diamine. The process may be applied to a solution of the copolymer in dimethyl formamide, or to the copolymer in powder, film, or fibre form.
