Abstract

Sheets of a copolymer of partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate and monomeric acrylonitrile, which have been oriented by stretching and dyed with a dichroic dye or stain, such as iodine, are employed as light polarizers. Dyeing may be effected prior to casting of the sheet, or subsequent to casting and prior to stretching, or subsequent to stretching. The dyed sheet may be subsequently stabilized by treatment with boric acid and borax. Specification 549,698, [Group IV], is referred to.
