799,365. Polarizing apparatus. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORPORATION. March 9, 1956 '[March 11, 1955], No. 7439/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 97(1) A light polarizer comprises a sheet of polymerized organic acid ester of vinyl alcohol of which at least a part of the surface is hydrolysed to polyvinyl alcohol which is molecularly oriented and dyed or stained with a dichloric substance. The sheet may be of polyvinyl trifluoroacetate, polyvinyl perfluorobutyrate or proprionate or polyvinyl trichloroacetate hydrolysed on the surface by gaseous ammonia, a gaseous amine or by alkaline solutions, and dyed with iodine, the sheet being molecularly oriented by stretching at some stage in the process. The dyed surface may be treated with boric acid. Specification 549,698 is referred to.
