Abstract
719,303. Eddy-current couplings. HOWARD, G. J. E. July 2, 1952 [June 11, 1951], No. 13844/51. Class 35 A variable speed eddy current coupling comprises a driving member consisting of a collar 2 supporting a steel ring 3 with a copper lining 4 and a driven member 7 carrying permanent magnets 8 preferably of horse-shoe section, the member 7 being adapted to be moved axially by a handle 10 so as to vary the air gap whereby a variable speed of the driven member is obtained relatively to the driving member. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the driving member is moved axially and it is arranged to rotate in an annular air gap formed by two sets of horse-shoe permanent magnets 11, 12 carried by the driven member. Fig. 4 shows a further modification wherein neither the driving nor driven member. moves axially and the linking flux emanating from the magnets 15 is controlled by axially movable iron blocks 14. In Fig. 1 it is possible to maintain constant speed of the driven shaft 5 independent of the torque transmitted by arranging a governor on the shaft 5 so as to control the position of the driven member 7.
