Abstract

648,502. Electromagnetic clutches. ROBERTSON, D. R., and SAMPIETRO, A. C. Sept. 3, 1948, No. 23302. [Class 35] The co-operating members of an eddy-current clutch have spherical air-gap surfaces 62 and are located axially and radially relatively to each other by a self-aligning bearing 56 concentric with the air-gap, one of the members being mounted on a resilient coupling permitting tilting and lateral displacement. In the form shown, the driving hub 54 which carries the inner race of the bearing is mounted on the driving-shaft 53 and carries an armature member comprising a disc 50 carrying two magnetic rings 59, 60 secured by bolts 61. The driven hub 63, which is splined to receive a shaft 64, carries pins 68 mounted in rubber bushes' 67 and having their ends secured in a driven ring 69 fixed to a magnetic ring 70 in which the outer race of the bearing is secured. A further magnetic ring 76 is secured on ring 70 and encloses a coil 80 for exciting interdigitated poles 78, 79. In a modification, the spherical surfaces are on one side only of a diametral plane so that the coupling may be easily dismantled.
