A mobile lifting apparatus comprises a pair of channel guides A mounted on a wheeled base, a frame B which is moved in the guides A by a winch actuated pulley mechanism D and a load handling platform E, F normally supported at the top of frame B but constructed so that the portion E can be secured to the bottom of frame B, as shown, to enable loads to be handled at a lower level. Lugs H, K are provided on the frame B for the attachment of a jib I which has at its free end a pulley X co-operating with a cable Y anchored to the guides at Z. Members L, M are carried by the frame B to engage respectively at a predetermined point of travel of frame B, a pawl (not shown), which when so engaged prevents lowering rotation of a ratchet wheel on the winch drive shaft S, and a radial abutment O also on this shaft.
