Classes 6 (1), 6 (2) and 6 (3) A portable power-operated device for hedge trimming, weed cutting, hoeing and cultivating comprises an elongated tubular frame 1, an engine 6 and a reciprocating work-head 47 carried at opposite ends of the frame and a chain for transmitting power from the engine to the work-head enclosed within the framework. As shown, the work-head 47 comprises a reciprocating cutter adjustably mounted in the frame 1. The engine 6 is pivotally mounted and is adjustable by means of a handle 36 to vary the tension in a belt 23 which connects a pulley on the engine with a pulley 24 driving the chain which is carried on two sprockets, the sprocket adjacent the cutter being provided with a crank-pin which drives the cutter. An adjustable strap 74 is provided to support the weight of the device. The cutter may be replaced by a hoe blade mounted on a shaft attached to the crank-pin. A stay is connected to the frame and is provided with a swivelling block having a bore through which slides the hoe shaft. The strut is held adjustably by a further strut connected to the frame, the arrangement being that the rotational movement of the crank pin is converted into an elliptical movement of the hoe blade.
