Abstract

718,474. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Aug. 26, 1952 [Sept. 1, 1951; Sept. 1, 1951], No. 21443/52. Class 8 (1). Raising to the inoperative position of the nozzle 11, Fig. 1, of a handle propelled suction cleaner comprising a body 10 mounted on wheels 19, 20 an agitator 22 within the nozzle and a port 38 to receive a converter 41 in a downward direction is effected by a spring e.g. a torsion spring 46 tending when stressed by the insertion of the converter 41 to raise the nozzle 11 and doing so when the downward force required to insert the converter is removed. One end of the spring 46 forms a combined skid and belt guard 48 and the other end 50 normally engages a latch detent 51, and during the insertion of the converter 41 through the port 38 at the front of the cleaner a lower cam surface of a leading converter abutment 44 rotates the end 50 clockwise within a bearing 47 until they clear one another, and then the lower cam surface of a trailing abutment 43 rotates the end 50 counter clockwise so as to disengage the end 50 from the detent 51 and thereafter tensions the spring 46 sufficiently to allow it to raise the nozzle 11 on releasing the downward pressure on the converter 41. The latter is automatically latched in its ports 38. During withdrawal of the converter which has a forked end to straddle the fan shaft, the trailing abutment 43 recedes from the end 50 and the leading abutment then engages it to effect latching before cleaning it. In a modification the spring comprises a tension spring 77, Fig. 6. secured to one end to an arm 78 of a skid 69 pivoted about a shaft 70 between front wheels 20 and behind the nozzle 11.' The spring 77 is secured at the other end to a pivoted lever 74 which is depressed by and during the insertion of the converter 65 resulting in tensioning of the spring 77 sufficiently to raise the nozzle 11' on releasing the downward pressure on the converter. The skid 69 and its arm 78 are normally biased to the closed position by a torsion spring 71. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 645,309.
