Abstract

717,744. Stanchions &c. HILLS (WEST BROMWICH) Ltd. Aug. 16, 1951 [Aug. 16, 1950], No. 20300/50. Classes 20 (1), 20 (2) and 20 (4) A hollow box-like stanchion for use in the erection of a skeleton framework of a multi-storey bui'ding has an upper portion 1 of square crosssection extending upwardly of the level of the top floor 2 of the complete structure, and the remainder 3, 5, of rectangular cross section with the shorter axis equal in length to the axis of the square portion and the longer sides arranged to project beyond one and the same side of the square portion so that only one face of the stanchion is stepped outwardly at one or more positions along its length. Preferably each step on the stanchion face is located at the level of a floor 2, 4. As shown the longer sides of the parts 3, 5 are respectively twice and three times the width of the corresponding sides of the part 1. A reinforcing plate may be welded &c. to either or each of the wider sides of the rectangular portions. To enable beams to be anchored to the stanchion one or more externally-flanged sleeves are secured around the stanchion by. we'ding &c., each sleeve consisting of flat or channelled plates welded together so as to provide up to four pairs of external flanges 10, and each beam is secured between a pair ;of flanges. Thus Fig. 3 show a sleeve formed of four flat plates 8, 8a, engaged by s ots 9, 9a, and welded together. A similar s'eeve formed by joining four channels, and sleeves for receiving three beams only and for attachment to other parts of the stanchion are also shown. Fig. 6 shows a sleeve 13 for receiving two beams at right angles to each other, and Fig. 9 shows a sleeve 16 fixed to one face by a base ;plate 17 and adapted to be socketed on to and secured to the foot of the stanchion so that the assembly of sleeve 16 and plate 17 serves as a supporting base for the stanchion. One flange on each longer side of portions such as 3 and 5 is formed by an additional plate 18 welded to the sleeve. Metal lattice may be secured to the stanchion faces and be embedded. in concrete to provide a heat-protective coating, or the stanchions may be painted &c. Specification 717,742 is referred to.
