Abstract
"Bi-metallic" salts of alkylene diamine polycarboxylic acids, particularly ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, are described having two of their four carboxylic groups neutralized by an alkali metal ion, such as Li, K, Na and Cs, and the remaining carboxylic groups neutralized by a metal ion other than an alkali metal ion; the second metal ion may be an alkaline earth metal ion, such as calcium, or lead, cadmium or copper. The disodium mono-calcium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid may be prepared by dissolving one molar weight of the tetra amino acid in water with two molar weights of NaOH and digesting the solution at a warm to hot temperature with one molar weight of freshly precipitated calcium hydroxide, and then evaporating to dryness.ALSO:A metal-working lubricant comprises an aqueous solution of a bi-metallic salt of an alkylene diamine poly-carboxylic acid having two of its carboxylic groups neutralized by an alkali metal ion and the remaining carboxylic groups neutralized by a metal ion other than an alkali metal ion. The alkylene diamine polycarboxylic acid may be ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, and the alkali metal ion may be lithium, potassium, sodium or caesium. The solution may be used in wire-drawing of base metals, such as iron, nickel or copper, or their alloys. The second metal ion of the bi-metallic salt may be above or below the metal being drawn in the displacement series of metals in aqueous solutions of the salt. In the former case the second metal ion may be an alkaline earth metal. An example is the di-sodium mono-calcium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid. An aqueous solution of the salt may be used per se but preferably contains a soap, such as sodium stearate, in substantially equal proportions; the solutions may have densities between 0.98 and 1.1. When the second metal ion is displaceable by the metal of the wire being drawn, it may be lead cadmium or copper. Aqueous solutions of these salts may be used per se, but preferably contain a soap, such as sodium stearate, with the salt in large excess of the soap. For beryllium-copper alloy wires the salt may be the di-sodium mono-cadmium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid. For all the solutions the water is preferably deionized with the tetra-sodium salt of ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid.
