Abstract

Aminopolyhydroxy alcohols (e.g. 2-amino-2-methyl-1 : 3-propanediol and tris-hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane) are prepared by condensing nitroparaffins with aldehydes and reducing the nitro group. Specifications 515,637 and 520,199 are referred to.ALSO:Phthalocyanine sulphonamides are prepared by condensing phthalocyanine sulphonyl chlorides with polyhydroxy primary alkylamines, e.g. 2-amino-2-methyl-1 : 3-propanediole, 2-amino - 2 - ethyl - 1 : 3 - propanediole, tris-(hydroxymethyl) - aminomethane, glucosamine, 1 - aminoglucose, 1 - methylamino - 2 : 3-propanediol, and 1-ethylamino-2 : 3-propanediol. The phthalocyanine may be a metal derivative such as a copper, cobalt, nickel, iron, or aluminium derivative, and the aromatic nuclei thereof may be phenyl, diphenyl, naphthyl, or anthranyl nuclei, which may contain substituents such as halogen atoms (e.g. chlorine), amino, carboxy, or sulphonic acid groups. The reaction may be carried out in water or other suitable medium at room or lower or higher temperatures. Some of the sulphonamides are soluble in dilute aqueous caustic alkali, and some form lakes with Ca or Ba salts. Examples are given of the preparation of sulphonamides from copper phthalocyanine tetrasulphonyl chloride and (1) tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane, (2) 2 - amino - 2 - methyl - 1 : 3 - propanediol, and (3) glucosamine hydrochloride, from aluminium phthalocyanine tetrasulphonyl chloride and tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane, from copper phthalocyanine mixed di- and tri-sulphonyl chlorides and tris - (hydroxymethyl) - aminomethane, and from copper phthalocyanine monosulphonylchloride and tris - (hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane.
