Abstract

717,001. Magnetrons. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. April 15. 1952 [April 14, 1951], No. 9444/52. Class 39(1) A multi-cavity magnetron comprises a hollow cylindrical anode 1 with the cavities 1<SP>1</SP> formed in an end face so as lie in a plane parallel with an annular coaxial cathode 2 spaced from the anode. Magnetic pole-pieces 3, 4 coaxial with, and on each side of the cathode, provide a radial magnetic field. The anode 1 is integral with a part 8 which carries a coupling window 14, and is mounted on a flexible diaphragm 10. A nut 11 which can rotate on a member 12 fixed to the pole-piece 3, provides for the axial displacement of the part 8 so that the cathode-anode spacing may be varied. The resonant cavities in the anodes may comprise radial notches, of rectangular cross-section of equal or unequal depths, or with inclined bottoms, or they may be of cylindrical cross-section. They may be open or closed at each end. Grooves may be formed in the teeth between adjacent cavities, as described in Specification 683,524. The cathode is preferably emisive only over the part facing the anode, and may be provided with plates closing off the sides of the inter-action space. An axial magnetic field may also be provided. By shaping the pole-pieces the magnetic fields may have both radial and axial components.
