Abstract

716,705. Variable drives for textile spinning &c. machines; builder motions. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 14, 1951 [July 28, 1950], No. 18927/50. Class 120(2) [Also in Group XXXVII] An arrangement for effecting change in the driving speed of a spinning frame electrically driven at two different 'speeds comprises a switch effective according to its position to determine the driving speed and means for controlling the switch position consisting of a cam that is rotated under the influence of the ratchet wheel shaft of the builder motion in such a manner that, at a predetermined stage in the spinning operation, the position of the switch will be changed to cause the frame to be driven at a higher speed. A builder motion lever 1 mounted for oscillation by a cam engaging a roller 3 carries a ratchet wheel 4 fixed to a shaft provided with two worms 5, 6. The worm 5 engages a rack 7 carried in a slide on the lever 1 and the worm 6 engages a worm wheel 8 mounted alongside a chain block wheel 9 on a spindle carried by the lever 1. A chain 10 connected through a compound pulley 11 to a chain 12 attached to ring rail lifter members may be fastened to the chain block wheel 9 for winding a cop build or a combined build or to a lug 14 on the rack 7 for a roving build. A cam 16' may be mounted on the wheel 9 or on the shaft of the wheel 9 for actuating a two-position switch. This cam is formed by two ring members 25, 26, Fig. 4, which may be adjusted relatively to one another to alter the position of the leading and trailing edges of the operative portion of the cam that acts upon a roller 29 resting on the plunger 31 of a switch 15<SP>1</SP>. A similar switch controlling device having a rotary cam operating a switch plunger has the cam rotated by a lever system driven by the rack 7. Mercury switches in which the mercury is displaced by an iron body movable by magnetic means may be employed. The switches may control a twospeed motor or may energize one or other of two motors that are both permanently coupled to the frame for driving it at different speeds, as described in Specification 716,704.
