Abstract

827,850. Control of motors; controllers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 25, 1956 [Sept. 27, 1955], No. 27467/55. Class 38 (3). The chain block wheel shaft 11 of a spinning- machine is driven in accordance with the ratchet wheel shaft of the builder motion and operates a slider 12a of a variable resistor 12 through a crank 10 and link 13. A cam 14 rotates with the shaft 11 and controls micro-switches 15, 16. At the commencement of spinning the switch 15 is closed and switch 16 opened, so that relay coil 18a is energized through resistor 17, the resistor 12, and a trimming resistor 20. The relay 18 picks up to energize a low-speed contactor 23, and spinning begins at a low speed of operation. As the cycle proceeds, the resistor 12 is increased until the relay 18 drops out to energize the highspeed contactor 24. This is followed by the opening of switch 15 but this does not immediately affect the high-speed operation of the machine. The value of resistor 12 is gradually increased to a maximum whereupon the motion. of the slider 12a is reversed and the resistance is reduced until the cam 14 allows the closure of switch 16 thereby completing a circuit for the relay coil 18a including a trimming resistor 21. At this stage, however, the total resistance in circuit is such that the relay 18 does not pull in. Further reduction of the resistor 12 causes the relay to operate and the remainder of the spinning cycle is completed at the low speed of operation. The moments in the spinning cycle, at which the speed-changes are made, are. determined by adjustment of the trimming resistors 20, 21, and these adjustments may be made whilst the machine is operating. In a modification, the sliding resistor 12 is replaced by a rotary resistor coupled directly to the shaft 11. The two operating speeds may be provided by a change-pole motor or by two separate motors.
