Abstract

716,367. Driving fuel pumps. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Nov. 10, 1950 [Nov. 10, 1949], No. 27574/52. Class 102 (1). [Also in Group XXVII] In an internal-combustion engine fuel pump driving arrangement, provision is made for the driving of the pump on the one hand by an electric motor and on the other hand by a driving member driven by the internal combustion engine, such provision including clutch means which permits of the connection of the pump alternatively to either one of the drives and its disconnection from the other. In Fig. 1 a fuel pump 2 is driven either by an electric motor 8 or by the engine which it supplies, according to the position of a clutch 11. When the engine is at rest absence of pressure in a pipe 24 fed by a pump 25 e.g., by the lubricating oil pump, driven by the engine enables a piston 14 to move to the left and shift the clutch into a position in which the electric motor drives the pump. Thus on closing a switch 34 which may or may not at the same time also switch on the ignition current or set the starter in operation a detent 32 frees a rod 30 which. moves to the left and closes a switch 9 which sets the electric motor in operation. When the engine is running the pressure in the pipe 24 raises a control valve 19 and then passes to a space 16 and shifts the clutch by means of a lever 13 into a position in which the pump is connected to a gear 12 driven by the engine. At the same time a projection 36 on the clutch lever 13 returns the switch to its open position. A restriction 28 may be regulable. In Fig. 2 both the engine and the electric motor drive the pump through the medium of a one way clutch 37, 38. The electric motor is switched on by means of a lever 41 either operated, conjointly with the engine starter or at will by the operator. Provided the lever 41 is returned to the inoperative position, the electric motor switch is opened either by a thermosensitive device 43 for example in the oil circuit which may act through a servomotor. or by a piston operated by pressure liquid for example by oil from the engine lubricating oil circuit. It is stated that the electric motor may be cut out by means responsive to engine speed. A delay action device may be provided to delay operation of the means for cutting out the electric motor. A changeover clutch for changing over from electric motor drive to engine drive may be controlled by hand. The electric motor may be switched in when the ignition switch or the engine starting switch is operated and is cut out automatically when the engine has developed a normal running condition.
