Abstract

415,460. Starting prime movers. CARTER, F., CARTER, E., and BLACKSTONE & CO., Ltd., Rutland Engineering Works, Stamford, Lincolnshire. Feb. 25, 1933, No. 5771. [Class 38 (iv).] The fuel supply to an internal-combustion engine is controlled by the pressure of lubricant, of which the supply to the control device is initiated by operating the engine starting switch. Upon closing a push button switch 42, solenoids 37, 17 are energized thereby closing the starting motor 38 switch and moving a valve 14 to the right respectively. The valve then permits oil pumped by the engine to pass through ports 19, 20 to a cylinder 1 and actuate a piston 2 connected to the fuel pump or throttle valve. The lubricant supply is partially cut off toward the end of the stroke by a piston valve 21. Should the oil pressure fail the piston 2 is returned by the spring 3 and cuts off the fuel supply. The engine is normally stopped by closing a second push switch 41 which energizes the solenoid 16 and returns the valve 14 thereby connecting the cylinder through a drain 18 to the sump. When a float operated &c. automatic starting switch 39 is employed the motor circuit is broken at 29, 30 after starting by a switch 8 which is tripped by the piston 2 at the end of its stroke and simultaneously closes a gap 31, 32 in the stopping circuit. When the switch 39 moves to contact 45 the solenoid 16 is energized as before and the returning piston 2 again trips the switch 8 into the starting position. A switch 40 may be employed to isolate the automatic starting switch 39 when it is desired to use the push switches 41, 42.
