This invention has for its object to provide a pp y pump for heavy oil engines operable by a shaft of the engine and also by a manually actuated mechanism.
5 The invention has in view the provision of a manual control of which all of the members are easily accessible from the exterior and which does not interfere in any way with the tightness of the pump housing. I
It concerns a supply pump for heavy oil engines and other applications operated by a shaft of the engine and by a manually operated mechanism, characterized by the fact that the manual mechanism is exteriorly mounted upon the pump housing and actuates a reciprocating member from the side thereof which is inaccessible from the exterior whereby this mechanism is controlled from without through a hand lever mounted on an accessible side of the pump housing. r The following detailed description discloses one form of the mechanism in which the manual means consists of a slide mounted in' an outer portion of the pump housing and actuates from the exterior the reciprocating elements of the 5 pump.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the supply pump and a part of the body of the injec-' tion pump and its cam shaft; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 30 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The supply pump is mounted on the injection pump of known type consisting, for example, of four individual pumps, the pistons 2 of which are actuated through the intermediary of tappet roll- 5 ers 4,- tappets 5 and cams l8 from shaft 3 mounted in the housing of the injection pump.
The supply pump 8 draws oil from the principal supply tank by way of passage 9. The body ofthe pump in which forms the supply pump carries a tubular projection ll extending into the interior of the injection pump. Within the tubular member II is guided a tappet l2 which actuates the piston l5 of the supply pump through the intermediary of a spring is and stem 14.
45 The piston l5 reciprocates in the body of pump l 0 to the face of the piston opposing the tappet stem l4 between the intake valve I9 and the discharge valve 20 is discharged past the discharge valve 20, the intake valve being closed.
In accordance with the present invention the 5 supply pump is provided with a mechanism adapted for the manual actuating thereof. This mechanism for manual actuation comprises a slide rod mounted in an outer position of the casing ID of the supply pump. This slide rod 10 oscillatory. on a pivot 3i mounted in a yoke 32 placed onan extension of the cap 24 of the pump cylinder Ill. The yoke extension 32 for hand lever 26' is detachably held by retainer 34 in a recess in the outer end of cap 24. A link 33 con- 25 nects the arm 261 of the lever 26 to the end of the guide stem 252 of slide rod 25.
Slide rod 25 carries at its end a finger 21 adapted to engage the tappet l2 which is so disposed on the side of the pump which is inaccessi- 30 ble from the exterior.
The operation of the hand pump is as follows: The arm 262 of the lever. 26 is moved in the direction of the arrow f1. This compresses the spring 28, the rod 25 sliding. in the direction of arrow 12. The finger 21 engages the tappet l2 which actuates the piston l5 to discharge oil from the pump. On discontinuing pressure on .arm'26z of lever 26 the spring 26 returns the slide 25 to its normal position. The finger 21 no longer engages the 4 tappet l2. The same is returned by the spring l3 and piston I5 is returned to its position by spring l6 thereby drawing oil into the pump chamber.
It will be seen that the objects of the invention are thus attained in that a system is provided in which manual actuation of a supply pump is easily accessible from a point exterior thereof. No element of the manual actuation penetrates or traverses the chamber ID of the supply pump, and the fluid tightness of this is in no way diminished.
What is claimed is:
1. A supply pump of the type adapted to be driven by an engine or actuated manually, comprising a pump housing having a bore forming a pump cylinder, an end cap for said cylinder, a plunger reciprocative in said cylinder, a shaft adjacent one end of said housing for actuating said plunger from the engine, a hand lever mounted upon said end cap'in a plane passing through the axis of said plunger, and a slide member operable by said hand lever to actuate said reciprocative plunger from a point adjacent said shaft, whereby normally inaccessible elements are actuated from the accessible end of said housing. A supply pump of the type adapted to be driven by an engine or actuated manually, comprising a pump housing having a bore forming a pump cylinder, an 'end cap for said cylinder, a plunger reciprocative in said cylinder, a shaft adjacent one end of said housing for actuating said plunger from the engine, a supporting mem- 2o ber retained in a recess in said end cap, ,8- hand lever pivoted on said supporting member in a plane passing through the axis of said plunger, and a slide member operable by'said hand lever to actuate said reciprocative plunger from a point adjacent said shaft, whereby normally inaccessible elements are actuated from the accessible end of the pump housing.
3. In a fuel supply means for internal combustion engines, an injection pump including a housing, pistons in said housing, a cam shaft within said housing having cam for actuating said pistons, a supply pump for said injection pump including a housing attached to a side wall of said injection pump housing, a plunger in said supply pump housing having a portionprojecting into said injection pump housing and actuated, by one of said cams, a slide member extending into said injection pump housing and contacting said projecting portion at a point adjacent said cam, and manually operable means mounted exteriorly of said housings i'or reciprocating said slide member.

In a fuel supply means for internal combustion engines, an injection pump including a housins. pistons in said housing, a cam shaft within said housing having cams for actuating said pistons, a supply pump for said-injection pump including a housing attached to a side wall of said injection pump housing and having a portion projecting through an opening therein, a plunger 7 in said supply pump housing having a tappet guided in said projecting portion and actuated by one of said cams, a slide member extending into said injection pump housing and having a finger contacting said tappet, and manually operable means for actuating said slide member from the exterior of said housings.
