[Also in Groups VIII, XXIII and XXX] A composite glued wooden member, such as a mast. pole, building beam or railway s'eeper, is made by clamping together glued wooden e'ements so that passages are formed between them and then heating the member by a liquid impregnating medium, such as creosote, the medium affecting not only the outside of the member but penetrating into the interior through the passages. After impregnation in a container of creosote at 140‹ C, the member is preferably left in the container until the creosote cools. The elements may be irregularly-shaped pieces of waste wood that natura'ly present gaps between them or may be grooved on at least one face to provide the passages. The grooved elements are assembled so that equal numbers of passages are provided in unit cross-sectional areas to ensure that the heating of the joints and the impregnation is uniform.
