Composite wooden beams are constructed with their most-stressed edges formed of timber having a greater resistance to bending stresses than the rest of the beam. As shown, an I- beam has a web 6 of three plies of spruce, glued together, and flanges 7 of Ayan wood glued thereto, the crosssectional area of the flange forming 50% of the overall cross-sectional area of the beam. In other embodiments, pine, fir. Douglas fir, stone pine or red cedar may be used for the lower quality wood, and Cowbaril, Takieng or Keruing for the high quality wood, the areal proportion of which may vary between 10 and 50% of the total area. The binding strength of the high quality wood must be over 1,000 kg./cm<SP>3</SP> and the Young's Modulus E thereof should be greater than 120,000 kg./cm<SP>2</SP>. Such beams may be strengthened at points of maximum stress by extra plies of high quality timber glued thereto, (Figs. 3 - 5, not shown), and may be I-shaped as shown or rectangular in cross-section.
