Abstract

716,182. Drying grain; drying air. SPILLERS, Ltd. March 10, 1951, No. 5820/51. Classes 34(1) and 34(2) In a method of drying grain, seeds or the like in bulk by passing air therethrough while the grain is moved continuously or intermittently the relative humidity of the drying air is made less than 30 per cent by removal of water therefrom by air drying apparatus. The grain is placed in bins 11 having air inlets 12, 13 and outlet 14 between. Grain movement is maintained by removal at the bottom and return to the top of the bin by an elevator 21. Air is dried by a drier 22 having four beds of silica gel or alumina. The casing has upper and lower rotary disc valves 25, 28 attached to a spindle 38 rotated a quarter of a revolution periodically under the control of a time switch and a fan 23 draws air downwardly through the bed 26 while a second fan on a common shaft draws hot air and products of combustion from a burner 32 upwards through another bed 30 for reactivation, the rotation of the valves allowing the use and reactivation of the absorbent beds in turn. The products of combustion are passed through a filter and cooled to a safe temperature by dilution with atmospheric air before passing to the beds.
